(1/s)+(1/(s′))=(2/R)  (1/s)+(1/(−2))=(2/(−12))  (1/s)=(1/3)  ⇒s=3

$$\frac{\mathrm{1}}{{s}}+\frac{\mathrm{1}}{{s}'}=\frac{\mathrm{2}}{{R}} \\ $$$$\frac{\mathrm{1}}{{s}}+\frac{\mathrm{1}}{−\mathrm{2}}=\frac{\mathrm{2}}{−\mathrm{12}} \\ $$$$\frac{\mathrm{1}}{{s}}=\frac{\mathrm{1}}{\mathrm{3}} \\ $$$$\Rightarrow{s}=\mathrm{3} \\ $$

according to this sign convention  will an upright imahe be positive  or negative?

(1/x_o )+(1/x_i )=(1/f)           f=(R/2)  (1/(x_o  ))=(1/f)−(1/x_i )           x_i =−2    f=−6  x_o =+3  cm
