Total area = ((P∙a)/2)   a: apothem   P: perimeter   let x be the side of the octagon   Total area = 8x ∙ (((x + x(√2))/2)) ∙(1/2)   area shaded = x^2   ((Total area)/(area shaded)) =  (x^2 /((8x^2 (1 +(√2)))/4)) = (x^2 /(2x^2 (1+(√2))))= (1/(2+2(√2)))
