1 large pump needs x hours to fill 1 pool this means it fills (1/x) pool per hour similar 1 small pump fills (1/y) pool per hour 2 large pumps + 1 small pump need 4 hours to fill 1 pool ⇒ they fill (1/4) pool per hour (2/x)+(1/y)=(1/4) ⇒ 8y+4x=xy similar: (1/x)+(3/y)=(1/4) ⇒ 4y+12x=xy 8y+4x=4y+12x ⇒ 4y=8x ⇒ y=2x 16x+4x=2x^2 ⇒ 10x=x^2 x≠0 ⇒ divide by x x=10 y=20 this means 1 large pump fills (1/(10)) pool per hour 1 small pump fills (1/(20)) pool per hour together they fill (1/(10))+(1/(20))=(3/(20)) pool per hour each 4 of them fill ((12)/(20))=(3/5) pool per hour ⇒ they need (5/3) hours=100 minutes to fill the pool
